We need your help advocating for much-needed traffic safety improvements around our campus. Based on feedback from staff and community members, we’ve identified four specific changes that would significantly improve safety for our students, families, and staff:
- Convert southbound Corona Street to one lane from 10th Avenue to 8th Avenue - This would align traffic patterns with the rest of Corona Street and Downing Street, reducing speed and congestion. Corona Street is only two lanes outside of the school.
- Change parking regulations on Corona Street between 9th and 8th Avenue to a full “Passenger Loading Zone” - The entire block along our playground should be designated for passenger loading, just as it is on Downing Street. Currently, there are only three car lengths of loading space on the block, and parking enforcement is inconsistent. Expanding this zone would create safer and more efficient drop-off and pick-up conditions.
- Increase School Zone signage, flashing lights, and posted speed limits within the school block - Additional and better-placed signage is needed between 9th and 8th Avenue on both Corona and Downing Streets, as well as on 8th Avenue between the two. The few signs that exist are too far from school to effectively slow traffic or alert drivers of the School Zone.
- Eliminate left turns from Corona Street and Downing Street onto 9th Avenue - Heavy traffic and the presence of the bus lane cause vehicles turning left to block crosswalks, creating dangerous conditions for pedestrians during arrival and dismissal. Restricting left turns during school hours would significantly reduce these risks.
How You Can Help
We need as many parents and community members as possible to submit 311 Reports supporting each of these changes and safety issues. Below is a simple click path and sample language you can use to make your report submission quick and consistent.
Click Path:
- Go to 311 Report
- Under “What can we help you with?” select Neighborhood Issue
- “Describe the issue” using the text below (one report per proposed change)
Corona Street to One Lane
The traffic infrastructure around Dora Moore Elementary (846 N. Corona Street) does not adequately support student safety. Southbound Corona Street expands into two lanes between 10th and 8th Avenue, resulting in high speeds, congestion, and unsafe crosswalk conditions at 9th Avenue and Corona Street. For the safety of students and community members, Corona should be reconverted into a single lane through 8th Avenue, consistent with the rest of the Capitol Hill corridor.
Corona Street Passenger Loading Zone
There is inadequate passenger loading capacity on Corona Street between 9th and 8th Avenue for families dropping off and picking up students at Dora Moore Elementary (846 N. Corona Street). Currently, only three car lengths are designated for passenger loading for a school serving approximately 300 children. This lack of space creates unsafe conditions and unnecessary congestion. Furthermore, there needs to be further enforcement of vehicles that are illegally parked in the current loading zone during the loading zone hours and cars that have been parked along Corona Street between 9th and 8th Avenue for more than 30 days. The entire block should be designated as a Passenger Loading Zone during school hours.
School Zone Signage
There are insufficient School Zone signs, flashing lights, and posted speed limits within the Dora Moore Elementary school block (between 9th and 8th Avenue on Corona and Downing, and between Downing and Corona on 8th Avenue). The existing signs are too few and too from campus and flash during non school hours rendering them ineffective in alerting drivers. To improve safety, additional signage with flashing lights must be installed within the school block.
Disallow Left Turns During School Hours
Traffic congestion on 9th Avenue in front of Dora Moore Elementary (846 N. Corona Street) creates unsafe crosswalks as vehicles turning left become stuck within them. The combination of a bus lane and high vehicle volume during arrival and dismissal results in unsafe conditions for pedestrians. Left turns from Corona Street and Downing Street onto 9th Avenue should be restricted during school hours.
